Summer getaway to Malibu

January 01, 1970 12.00 AM

It’s a summer party like few others, in that tony Southern California beach enclave of Malibu home to movie stars, tech titans and CEO parachutists. But it’s also a summer party few are ever invited, given the fact that’s there’s really only one decent hotel and summer rentals shorter than 30-days in duration are essentially illegal.

But if you do stay in Malibu, you’re address should be somewhere beachfront like the Malibu Beach Inn that’s owned by a neighboring billionaire and offers boutique hotel accommodations and recently-upgraded Carbon Beach Club restaurant alas worthy of its platinum address. It’s also walking distance to the new Nobu Malibu, an architectural beach compound created for California’s most famous sushi chef that’s one of the few decent waterfront restaurants in the area.

As for the old Nobu space vacated in the nearby Malibu Country Mart, Chinese restaurateur Mr. Chow alas has a beach location for anyone bold enough to contemplate chow mein in bikini heaven. Also new is Duck Dive, a lounge-like gastro-pub with emphasis on farm-to-table cuisine that’s open till 2am most weekends. As for other summertime developments in Malibu, look for designer emporium Maxfield’s fresh new makeover and the pop-up of British retailer AllSaints in town for a 12-month stint.
