The traditional Japanese exterior of this landmark building near the Harbour misleads those that come from far and wide in search of what many consider the top table in all of Sydney. A true temple of modern Japanese gastronomy, Tetsuya's is accessed through silver gates that lead to a tranquil reception that's a respite from all that is frenetic and touristy in the nearby neighborhood. The main dining room overlooks a Zen-garden with minimalist, modern aesthetic that can tend towards the overly formal with a crowd that doesn't always include a Sydney local.

The Food

Dinner and Saturday lunch begins with chilled pea soup with mint, steamed custard with sea urchin and salad of Kingfish and orange. Further courses evolve like edible vignettes with scampi coupled with chicken liver, trout caviar course, crab with foie gras and duck breast served with eggplant and almond.

Last Word

Sydney’s top Japanese eatery puts a continental spin on traditional seafood and sushi cuisine in landmark building near Darling Harbour.
