If you’re only going to splurge on one really worthy dinner in Budapest, Costes is perhaps your best option located in a fashionable dining room at the edge of Raday Utca. Blessed with a single Michelin star in 2010, Costes is in no way related to the famous Parisian brothers albeit a shared loved for pretty people and fine cuisine is readily found at both. A charming façade with summer terrace and crisp deco signage offers remarkably cosmopolitan interiors with two dining rooms divided by a sexy martini bar with ever-present bucket of chilled Taittinger champagne and wine wines. The step-up front dining room is cast in creamy colors with wood-paneled backdrop and walls arranged in modern, local artwork. The rear dining has more of a gentlemanly vibe with glass wall wine cellar and more of a late-night kind of spirit.
The Food
A chef with roots to Spain El Bulli and owners that don’t mind hiring a 2-star Michelin chef for consulting have created a dynamic culinary institution of the city’s most fashionable restaurant. An ala carte, Vegetarian and prix fixe tasting menu all offer philosophical quotes aptly translated in English for a mostly International clientele. Cold starters include salted cod and terrine of foie gras with quince consumer while hot appetizers dabble between parmesan polenta gnocci with truffles and duck leg confit with pan-fried foie gras. Main course is mostly from land with pork loin on artichoke puree, pheasant two ways including a delicious tortellini and venison ‘poivrade’ with walnut puree.
