Campanile and its La Brea bakery storefront have been part of the LA food scene for almost a generation, but that didn't stop the fanfare for the latest it-eatery by Chef Walter Manzke. Since opening it's been Goop'd by Gwyneth and blogged about by virtually every online magazine. Upon arrival, you'll find a dressy sort of Hancock Park resident parading into the former bakery area that now doubles as an oyster bar and coffee counter depending on what time of day you arrive. The space is massive, divided between a front bar with pizza oven and atrium refectory that connect to a two-story rear dining room that mixes bucolic French décor with period details of one of LA's finer 1920s buildings.

The Food

A lengthy menu is divided between smaller plate hors d’oeuvres, charcuterie and salads that include a flavorful bacon gruyere tarte that could have stayed in the oven a smidge longer, pig ear salad that was a tad too salty and egss on toast that serves up crunchy crostini topped with perfectly scrambled eggs and local uni. Main course is a variable of vegetables, meats and seafood with duck leg confit and braised beef short ribs coming up short of the Kabocha squash agnolotti and hefty prime strip loin.

Last Word

Former-Patina chef and Alain Ducasse alum does French country bistro menu with an American spirit within famous La Brea dining room once owned by Charlie Chaplin.
