It looks like the kind of beachy seafood eatery you'd find in Buzios or Bahia, a thatch-paneled dining room of pastel green wood chairs and crisp white table cloths that illuminates one of the city's sexiest crowds in near perfect movie star lighting. Under high ceiling strewn with hand sewn straw lamps, Contramar is notorious for its cutthroat lunch scene that use to require visitors queue-up and wait prior to its 1pm opening for a table. Luckily these days they accept reservations, from the connected few that know how to handle the hostess, making a lazy 3pm arrival for one of the chicest dining scenes in Central America flowing in bottles of pinot grigio and occasional champagne pop.

The Food

A legendary seafood lunch menu bares in mind the strict dietary habits of this fashion-minded crowd, with an endless menu of standout dishes like shrimp or ahi tuna tostadas with spicy chipotle mayonnaise, white fish or calamari tacos with roasted cabbage and aioli sauce, mussels in a spicy chipotle broth or salads topped with heaping of fried potatoes and shrimp or goat cheese. Main course hovers mostly around grilled fish dishes like a legendary octopus with single wedge of lemon as topping, sautéed soft-shell crabs and pescado a la talla Contramar (a split snapper, half with a dry red spice rub, the other half with green).

Last Word

Don’t forget to wash it all down with a michelada---beer mixed with lemon juice best requested in a stemmed glass for the ladies.
