We shared your potential ambivalence at eating inside a Baccarat showroom of cathedral-size chandeliers in the glittery former-mansion in Paris's 16th that is home to the crystal purveyor's new showroom, museum and this showy eatery that's been a often-written caption in most-every fashion magazine over the last year. And yet we still had trepidations. Located amongst the several lounges that make-up the first-floor, Cristal Room Baccarat is staged inside the former dining room of Marie-Laure de Noailles, who was the aristocratic former-owner of this historic home. The space has been modified by Philippe Starck who brought elements of whimsical modernism amongst exposed bricks walls set in ornate wood paneling and endless gilt details in the glittery refection of endless Baccarat crystal.

The Food

Baccarat has entrusted the kitchen of its Cristal Room restaurant to Guy Martin, the famous Michelin-rated chef who works with David Angelot for refined dishes amongst a dramatic tabletop of Baccarat crystal stemware, wine carafes, water glasses and candelabras. A staunch believer of “more is more,” Baccarat decorating borders gaudy and is only tempered by what many consider one of the best hidden gourmands in the 16th. Dishes like foie gras brulee dazzles the senses by marrying a creamy cunard with a sweet glaze that cracks with a fork any misconceptions you may have brought with you that this wasn’t a serious dining room. Succulent seafood dishes bring flavors of tuna tartare, grilled langoustines and pasta dishes that befit a light lunch or dinner starter. Heavier grilled meats, baked seafood and chicken dishes are followed by intellectual cheese platters and chocolate cookie chaser presented with the check.

Last Word

Former-Hotel de Marie-Laure de Noailles space is also available for private parties and is a popular after-party spot for fashion icons like Lagerfeld and Galliano.
