nightlife

Located in a once-dodgy stretch of Chinatown more familiar with hush-hush brothels than up-and-up boites, this Apotheke-theme cocktail lounge is the latest elixir to fill the old Opium Den space. Like a bar one of the Romanov-daughters would have partied till 3am, had they not been imprisoned and killed, the interior space is a nod to turn-of-the-century St. Petersburg with wooden banquettes in regal tones of red, gold and silver accented by red-tufted ottomans. Herringbone wood floors offset exposed brick wall with canopy-topped sconces and iron beams revealing 20-foot ceilings with ornamental gold leaf. A 10,000-lbs marble bar is attended by lead-mixologist Albert Trummer and series of "doctor" bartenders mixing within a bar of vintage shakers and distillers pouring classic drinks like sidecars and Absinthe-laden Death in the Afternoon.

Tips

Mid-week nights tend to attract more of a virtuous local cool crowd, while weekends entice the over-stylized masses with fresh clipping of recent NYMag and NYTimes articles.

Last Word

It’s name refers to the turn-of-the-cenury pharmacies of Germany and Eastern Europe, but it’s style if a buttoned-up cocktail lounge in the middle Chinatown looking to lure Meatpacking revelers and starlet partiers.
