Located near the main taxi stand in the central village, Tommy Africa’s is found through a subterranean entryway flanked by overdressed bouncer anytime after 10pm. A stained red carpet leads to a small cash register swapping Canadian dollars for wrist stamps and entrance to what is undoubtedly Whistler’s best dance club. The interior space features a lofty design with a central dance floor built around two go-go podiums and small stage. A smaller front bar serves various beers on tap while a larger bar located at the back of the club serves top-shelf liquors and mixed drinks. Weekends feature a lively dance crowd attended by party-minded locals and tourist’s intent on finding local nightlife. An adjacent billiards room entertains more fickle partiers unwilling to shake their social grooves.
Tips
Ask around town or pick a local magazine to find about private events and parties. Weeknights can be awkwardly slow and are best avoided unless your idea of a good time is dancing alone to ‘Rhythm is a Dancer”.
