The Silo Crowns Cape Town's Waterfront

March 03, 2017 09.01 AM

One of the most ambitious hotel developments anywhere, The Silo Hotel debuts this week along Cape Town's revived V&A Waterfront. South Africa's late-summer sun illuminates what was once the tallest structure in sub-Saharan Africa, now transformed into a towering landmark with bulging windows that look as if they've been gently inflated to create a lighthouse effect when illuminated at night. While Cape Town's hotel infrastructure already includes a One&Only, Belmond and the iconic Ellerman House; The Silo brings a masterful design force managed by hotelier Liz Biden and her Royal Portfolio (La Residence, Royal Malewane).

The bespoke design hotel sits on the upper floors of a turn-of-the-century grain complex that will also house the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) opening in September that will be home to the world's largest collection of contemporary African art. Inside the hotel, a glamorous 6th floor lobby features double-height reception, well-curated hotel boutique and entrance to in-house The Granary Café and the Willaston Bar. Chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert serving all-day contemporary comfort food with a focus on “fresh, seasonal and local ingredients” helms its main eatery, The Granary. On the rooftop, a grand pool deck features its own small café and bar as well as 360-degree views over the V&A Waterfront, Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain.

Guests of The Silo find an array of 28-rooms penned by owner Liz Biden along with local architects Rick Brown & Associates. Biden curates a modernist palette defined by floor-to-ceiling orb windows and concrete ceiling with hearty antiques, crystal chandeliers and a livable luxury-feel that you wouldn’t expect to find in a hotel that shares its address with a contemporary art museum. A full-service spa features gym, five treatment rooms and sauna that rival the nearby One&Only in services. For those looking to book into the property, the hotel is now fully open with forthcoming Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa opening later this year and its grand Zeitz MOCAA Gala on September 16th - an affair not to be missed.
