Summer's wane on Italy's most glittery isle

September 22, 2015 11.35 AM

Douse it cliche to write about summertime in Capri, but for a few weeks of September and early October there's few destinations more idyllic. To truly grasp the glamour of Capri, you'll want to avoid being hoarded with the masses at all times. This means a helicopter or a private speedboat from Sorrento or Positano compliments of Capri Boats where the trip includes an afternoon dip in a Blue Grotto that's often enjoyed completely alone midweek or perhaps late lunch in Ischia or at Il Riccio on the northern edge of the island.

Where to stay on Capri hasn't changed much in the last years, a tale of compromises between choosing the JK Capri with its incredible interiors and ho-hum location or La Scalinatella or Punta Tragara with their very-local design but impeccable locations above Faraglioni. We usually choose the later, passing the serenading juice lady along Via Tragara that leads to town and its passageways of Hermes, Bottega Venetta and Louis Vuitton. The Quisi terrace still has the best people watching whether its ladies in head-to-toe Chanel or older vacationers the color of an oiled saddle wheeling their luggage through town.

By day, beach club starworts like La Fontelina is still the chicest lunch with its parade of docking yachters while Bagni Tiberio is a bit more local and even more delicious. Fine dining has improved leaps and bounds in the last years with the arrival of Mamma, a 2-star Michelin epicurean located off the main piazza that's current the hottest dinner reservation in town. But in September, on some nights you can even get a table without a reservation. While not as awarded, Da Giorgio and Tragara's Monzu also prove great culinary grounds with views unrivaled. Afterwards, bars like Vv Club lure what remains of late-night revelers before everyone ends up with Guido and Anema e Core for the final few songs of summer
