Design Hotel

The flagship of Australia's hipster boutique brand known as QT Hotels, QT Sydney looms over the corner George and Market Streets. Visitors arrive to a grand landmark building flanked in gargoyles with entrance that retreats from its historic roots to a visually adventurous reception with period brick walls, terrazzo floors and ceiling intermixed in pounded-tin and raw rafter details. A series of interconnecting lounge spaces feature a menagerie of pop art with influences of the Orient mixed with mid-century modernist furnishings in bold, primate colors and geometric patterns. The hotel is home to a European-style brasserie known as Gowings Grill with all-day menu by Sydney restaurateur Robert Marchetti. The in-house lounge operates under the name Gilt, with its more modern design palette and rotating DJs popular with Sydney's fashionista.

The Room

Aussie designers Nic Graham and Shelley Indyk maintain original features like original timber floors in the 200 guest rooms that vary between standard QT King with heavy use of LCD lighting and textured fabrics to grander State Suite with its marble bathroom flanked by freestanding tub. Further details yield swag drapery, colorful throw rugs and salvaged bric-a-brac. An on-site spa with hamam pays tribute to the building’s fashionable past with its gilded display cases and treatments co-branded by boutique cosmetic purveyors.
