Luxury Boutique Hotel
In a capital city now cluttered with western luxury hotel options from St. Regis to W Hotels and Four Seasons, Los Alcobos proves that not all luxury hotels need to come from outside conquerors. Located in the city's hip and yet-to-be tourist clogged Polanco neighborhood, the ever speedy Presidente Masaryk Avenue is quickly hushed through a thick glass-enclosed lobby lined in limestone walls and marble tile floors with sweeping wood architectural staircase rising above a cascading water fountain.
Check-in comes within a elegant parlor cocooned in creamy walls and carved-wood reception counter serviced by dreamy looking staff in dapper business suits. Decor mixes Mexico native woods in rounded edges of its Aztec past with minimalist dimensions and abstract pottery. The hotel is home to two eateries including the gourmet Barroco by "Aguila y sol" chef Marta Ortiz, a 50-seat high end Mexican restaurant with textured walls and seaside color scheme as well as Dulce Patria in a more causal yet stylish indoor/outdoor dining and lounge space.
The Room
We expected our room to be loud, walking from the elevator through a carpeted coyer with limestone walls and into a hallway lined in rich walnut paneling. All was still quiet. Heavy wood doors open to bright, airy design space lined in rosewood custom furnishings atop chocolate-colored hardwood floors with wood-tile carpeting in small seating areas outfitted in slip-covered chairs and L-shaped sections in upgraded guest rooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows of thick double-glass panels face a bustling but silent city scene with private patio or small gardens best enjoyed from super-comfortable beds wrapped in hypoallergenic white goose down comforters and pillows by Rivolta Carmigiani. Five fixture bathrooms include deep soaking whirlpool tubs and rain showers with bath amenities by exclusive Sco Care NYC. A boutique spa area offers just two treatment rooms with modest menu of massage and facials as well as an on-site fitness center.
