Hotel Type

Budget Boutique

It was one of Australia's first boutique hotels, creating an identifiable brand since 1999 long sought after by the city's fashionista and media set. But as with most boutique hotels, the property was ridden hard with hot parties and wild weekenders making the most of its terrific location in Darlinghurst and affordable rooms easily attained for well under $200. After a recent upgrade and redesign by its parent company, who also owns nearby Diamant Hotel, the all-new Kirketon is roaring like a cougar hot off a tummy-tuck and a welcome addition to the city's fading boutique market.

With hotels like the Establishment and nearby Blue (formerly W Hotel) in need of a bit of refreshing, Kirketon offers a fully upgraded property of boutique-level guest rooms and suites. The hotel's new design replaces the hotel's minimalist history with a vivid color palette reminiscent of Paris's Marais complete with rich lobby area designed by Connie Alessi. While there is no restaurant for now nor hip bar to burn the midnight oil, the hotel is close enough to all the area nightlife action to keep your voracious palette wet with mojitos and preying singles till the wee hours of the morning.

The Room

A central staircase lined in rich satin-gray fabric with shiny-silver chandelier hanging from above interconnects the hotel's 40 guest rooms and suites. Standard accommodations are compact one-room spaces in a signature silver-gray color scheme with satin window covering, ornate beveled mirrors and small writing table with Wifi connection and daily newspaper. Beds are tucked with high-grade linens with feather pillows and well-positioned plasma TV for enjoying in-room movies. Larger rooms offer larger bed categories and more spacious seating area at a rather affordable price tag. Bathrooms are clean white spaces of porcelain sinks, occasional tub and toiletries by Kevin Murphy. While there's no on-site gym or spa, the hotel offers complimentary day passes to the nearby Fitness First with its toned collection of Sydney professionals that's far more fun than any closet-size hotel gym anyway.
