Iconic hotel to open in LA's Koreatown

November 06, 2013 12.00 AM

Along with the western expansion of Los Angeles in the early 20th century came the westward development of Wilshire Boulevard. Mid-Wilshire between Vermont and Western had its heyday in the 30s and 40s when Bullocks Wilshire was the place to shop, Brown Derby was the place to eat and the Ambassador was the place to stay. But then in the late-70s the area began to age as wealthier Angeleno’s opted for other areas and businesses chose downtown or Century City and not in between.

Now in what is simply known as Koreatown, The Line Hotel brings the creators of Manhattan’s NoMad Hotel and Freehand Miami to an unlikely swathe of urban LA. The result is the refashioning of a 336-room 1960s mid-rise that’s will become an epicenter of cool and relevance. Its landscape of eateries include a Korean-inspired eatery by chef Roy Choi as well as a café, farm-to-table commissary, lobby bar and homegrown nightclub that leaves little reason to leave the property. A sexy pool deck feels most like Freehand Miami complete with its garden of citrus trees and ornamental pool bar. Rooms incorporate cool industrial design elements like exposed concrete walls and floor-to-ceiling panels of glass that offer views from the Hollywood sign to the Port of Los Angeles.
