Its swanky black awning and bold logo of the recently renamed Torme's eatery is standout among a Palm Springs downtown of empty storefronts, shuttered mall and touristy shops that could use an infusion of Pottery Barn or even a Gap. Co-owned by the singers actual daughter, it immediately joins the top tier of Palm Springs eateries that with its New York-inspired interiors of dark wood furnishings, wood accented walls and stacked-stone accents among walls adorned with black-and-white images of the late jazz singers and 50s luminaries. While the textured walls and tiles floors we could do without, it's the late-night jazz scene with rotating jazz artists and ensembles that upgrades the Palm Springs night scene that makes this place standout.
The Food
A staple of the local morning show with a standalone food segment, cantankerous chef Bob Guccione whips up an American menu with undertones of classic Italian and steakhouse recipes. Well-selected appetizers of grilled artichoke stuffed with breadcrumbs and cheese, Tuna Poke on wonton chips and Angus sliders with trough of truffle fries are best of the bunch. A lengthy salad selection includes variations of the chopped, Caesar and wedge topped with choice of shrimp of chicken that can make into an entrée. Pastas include mac n’cheese that we think of as a better side with more sophisticated options like mushroom linguine with asparagus and thin crust pizzas topped with chicken confit and fennel or smoked salmon/
Last Word
Renamed Torme's brings steakhouse and jazz-theme eatery with touches of an old-time Hollywood supper club to downtown Palm Springs.
