In yet another restaurant offering that proves that Montauk is the hippest Hamptons of lat, South Edison is a stylish beach restaurant walking distance to the water and town. A deconstructed dining room of whitewash hardwood floors is arranged in crisp white chairs and rafter ceiling adorned with hanging bicycle. Connecting to the main dining room is a back bar with large eat-in space arranged in industrial steel chairs with primitive lighting pendants strewn from the ceiling. Walls are trimmed with vintage chalkboards scribbled in daily specials with perky surfer staff of local summer residents. Outside, a separate front porch is accessed through glossy red French doors perfect for barefoot summertime lunches or late night cocktails.
The Food
Chef Todd Mitgang, formerly of NY’s Cascabel Taqueria, does an innovative seafood menu ideally started with raw bar specialties like Littleneck clams, Jonah crab or hefty platters that mix a little bit of everything. Everything else is lumped in on a singular all-day menu with appetizers like savory shishito peppers or fried belly clams. Main course includes, Berkshire pork belly with mashed chickpeas, tuna BLT and quintessential lobster roll with a spicy kick.
Last Word
Montauk’s South Edison proves hip and tasty seafood eatery between the village and the beach.
