It can be a treacherous drive for anyone making the wintertime migration from Banff to Lake Louise along an often-iced highway, but so goes the road to the area's best restaurant. The rest of the year, however, it’s a zippy and rather picturesque jaunt through green valleys and waterways leading to the Post Hotel at Lake Louise. Far more demure than its Chateau neighbor, Alberta’s only Relais Chateaux eatery is located at the creekside Post Hotel with its stacked-log, three-story architecture leading into a lodge-style lobby and tranquil piano bar with semi-circular pitched ceiling. Inside the main dining room a more formal than expected vibe awaits as staff works a romantic and intimate space of stacked Canadian pine logs amongst tables covered in white tablecloths and Reidl stemware with crackling fireplace.
The Food
One of the most awarded dining experiences in western Canada, and by far the best in Alberta, Post Hotel is a year-round must for Banff visitors looking for a gourmet food scene. Swiss chef Hans Sauter presides over market fresh cuisine that results in fresh salads with local cheeses and dried meats, seared seafood and foie gras arrangement that are well sized and artistically presented. The kitchen offers a selection of game-inspired entrees from goose to venison as well as occasional bison and ostrich selections that are not for the faint of heart. For everyone else that a choice of two pasta dishes daily, locally harvested chicken, grilled beef and seafood dishes served in two dinner seatings available before or after 6:30 and 8:30pm.
