Situated in the historic part of Hvar away from the main harbor, Menego is one of the town's most famous culinary names located in a family house that dates back to the 14th Century. The restaurant was opened by a local wine-making family who continues to operate a vineyard where most of the restaurant's wine and vinegar is made in addition to running a private produce orchard for its nightly vegetables.
Today, Menego is accessed through a narrow staircase that leads to a small patio and Medieval inspired dining room. It's named after the family patriarch with its interior recreated to what he probably would have liked with exposed stacked-brick walls, rustic floors, decorative wine barrel furnishings and antique pendant lighting strewn from rafter ceilings.
The Food
A traditional Dalmatian eatery specialized in regional specialties of meat and fresh seafood with added touch of local organic vegetables and sustainable produce. Tapas-style meals begin with goat cheese aged in olive oil with fresh bread still hot from the over. Prosciutto and smoked fish platters are made in house, dried with different marinades and accompanied by hearty fresh salads. Seafood salads like marinated anchovies and grille octopus are some of the best in town, chased with heaving portions of eggplant and peppers.
