The hippest culinary neighborhood in SF today, the Mission has no shortage of starry eateries that vary between boho havens to Michelin-star constellations. Commonwealth isn't as flashy as its nearby culinary competitors despite being a powerhouse, its design leans on earthy elements of soft light and natural hickory woods with simple brick walls interrupted by singular panels glass. A simple one-room space features light bulbs strewn on the ceiling in lieu of chandeliers and simple mirrored partition diving rows of simple wooden tabletops. But what makes the restaurant standout is its superstar chef who dazzles with dishes that keep his patrons coming back for more.
The Food
A progressive American menu by former Ubuntu 1-star Michelin chef Jason Fox “showcases first rate ingredients, incorporating modern techniques and diverse culinary approaches.” A nightly menu includes tasting and ala carte options with star dishes like veal cheeks with artichokes, crispy ham and smoked marrow or sea urchin with asparagus and soft-scrambled eggs on brioche. A $10 donation is made to a local community charity from the order of each tasting menu. Dessert includes an impressive lemon sponge cake with thyme ice cream, tonka bean frozen yogurt with anise streusel and peanut butter semifreddo with chocolate ganache and frozen popcorn.
