Hotel Type
Budget Boutique
There's no shortage of trendy boutique hotels in the Catalan capital, but Casa Bonay still proves an exception from its imposing mansion address in Gran Vía. A design commune of sorts, the hotel lobby is a collaborative workspace of designers, chefs, juicers, coffee curators and publishers that feels like a sort of Spanish Soho House. Period architectural details like marble fireplaces tile floors and coiffured ceilings home to dual eateries. Libertine occupies the main lobby space outfitted in velvety sofas, leather recliners and rustic chandlier. Better yet is Elephant, Crocodile, Monkey by Argentinian chef Estanislao Carenzo (of Sudestada in Madrid) offering a convivial DJ-fueled gastro-lounge that's nothing short of outstanding.
The Room
With its offbeat location and heaving social scene that’s the star attraction in Gran Vía, a stay at Casa Bonay comes in one of its medium to large room offerings with varying courtyard and neighborhood views. Interiors are space, keeping the original architecture of the mansion but introducing an all-white palette mixed with muted veneer furnishings and step-out balconies in smaller rooms and proper terraces in larger ones. If given a choice, we go for dinner and stay for drinks - but head back to Omm or Ritz afterward.
