Luxury Retreat

Sister resort of Auberge du Soleil parlayed in a private canyon outside the Napa Valley town of Calistoga offering a 157-acre resort of serine oak tree canopies, rolling vineyards and rocky stream that feeds a private lake. Like a destination luxury camp, Calistoga Ranch is a sprawling compound of exclusive main lodges, outlying cottages and private lakehouse home to the in-house eatery with wine cellar and bar. Nor cal architecture is interpreted though Asian touches like pagoda-shaped roofline with modern metal sheeting and tumbled stone or cedar-shingled face surrounded in a lush landscape of olive trees and trailing rosemary. Inside, a thoroughly modern design aesthetic feels reminiscent of an Aman Resort with its flowing living spaces with wide-plank floors, teak furnishings with sophisticated design and beam ceiling interrupted by bold copper-trimmed fireplaces.

The removed location of Calistoga Ranch make it better for stay-in weekends of pampering at The Bathhouse with its indoor-outdoor architecture with glass-enclosed treatment rooms and outdoor infinity pool with wraparound teak decks lined in sun-lounger. Daytime meals are taken in The Lakehouse with its waterfront eatery in a long galley-style diing room flanked by a flagstone fireplace and wall of French doors that open to a summertime terrace. Afterward, guests linger in the adjacent bar over unfinished bottles of wine with additional fireplace and congenial atmosphere of mostly love-struck guests.

The Room

A spacious community of 47 guest villas and private residences is set in a lush landscape of pine trees and manicured gardens interrupted by cedar-shingle structures with private entrances. Bringing the outdoors in, light and airy spaces are dominated by exaggerated fireplaces with limestone or oil-rubbed bronze in sexy living areas of 3-person couches in attractive upholstery that wouldn’t be out of place in a luxury spa or Balinese retreat. Living and bedrooms are lined in glass and open to redwood terraces decorated in teak sectionals and club chairs with potted orchid and marble cocktail table ready for a bottle of Cabernet. Most feature additional redwood-wrapped hot tub and outdoor showers that allude to the overall privacy and seclusion of the cottages.
