One of the most majestic dining experiences on the Amalfi Coast, Don Alfonso is located in the town of Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi between Sorrento and Positano. A storied history that spans more than a century, the Laccarino family recently expanded their restaurant empire to include an on-site boutique hotel as well as kitchen outposts across Italy. A pristine all-white dining room features a modern design palette with splashes of traditional Italian décor like an elaborate plaster fireplace and salmon-colored chairs arranged at crisply starched tabletops. Regional antiques in rich honey-colored woods are arranged within hallways amongst oversize Murano glass chandeliers and the hand-painted majolicas seen throughout the Sorrentine Peninsula.
The Food
It’s a fabled story of two chefs, Alfonso and Ernesto Laccarino, who work side-by-side behind a pane of glass overlooking the blue-tiled kitchen area abuzz with vegetable chopping and firey flambé. Visitors are greeted by the mother hostess, delivering a menu of exceptionally presented Italian classics derived from locally sustained produce grown in a sprawling garden area adjacent to the restaurant and hotel. Depending on the time of year, the garden yields foot-tall herbs, fresh artichokes, famed tomatoes and of course those oversize lemons known throughout the region. Offering lunch and dinner throughout the year (closed Mondays and Tuesdays in off-season), meals begin with homemade pastas with rich mushroom or truffle sauces elaborately presented on square plates with artful drizzling. Main course includes traditional veal and poultry recipes as well as local fish and beef specialties that rotate based on daily availability.
