Nobu Nobu-franchise sets up shop in Honolulu

  • The Scene:

It's the chicest restaurant in Waikiki, even though we know the Nobu-brand from virtually every major city around the globe. At the center of the sexily reconceived Waikiki Parc Hotel located across from the Halekulani, Nobu is a decadently massive restaurant and lounge designed by David Rockwell who happened to also pen the Buddha Bar in New York and LA's Kodak Theater. Rockwell incorporates native Hawaiian elements like dwarf palms, natural water features and volcanic stone to define a main dining room flanked by a long sushi bar with separate private dining room and lounge. The crowd is the sexiest in the city; a mix of bronzed beach bums in pressed Irish linen and social elite who jet-hop between homes in Tokyo and LA.

  • The Food:

We know the menu. At its best it's ingenious sushi and Japanese cuisine derived from premium seafood ingredients hand-selected by personally trained Nobu chefs. Whether in Mykonos or St. Moritz, the crowd is always an assemblage of the pretty and rich who know no better Atkin's feast than a sashimi-laden meal at Nobu. Opened in summer 2007, the restaurant duplicates the local izakayas found throughout the islands with a sexy swagger that's hard to find anywhere in the region. The menu mixes traditional fish-finds like Hamachi and Toro sashimi or sushi with less-traditional Japanese items like duck breast with wasabi salsa and Kobe beef served to perfection. Skip dessert and simply indulge in the well-selected wine list that's a staple of all Halekulani-owned properties.
