Miami’s hotel market goes BOOM!

June 23, 2014 08.28 AM

With the most ambitious hotel developments anywhere in the world, Miami finds itself in a second boom era the likes of which have not been seen since Morris Lapidus left his architectural fingerprint throughout Miami Beach. A market recently enamored by GHM Hotels’ Setai, Soho House and Como Hotels will find new it-properties soon to debut by Swire Hotels, Alan Faena, Ian Schragger and hoteliers altogether unfamiliar to most Americans.

Opening this fall is The EDITION Miami Beach, the grown-up hotel vision of Ian Schrager at Collins and 29th Street with a condo-tower and hotel designed by John Pawson and bragging rights to a Jean-Georges Vongerichten flagship. EDITION, a joint venture with Marriott Hotels, will neighbor the first US-based AC HOTEL Miami " also owned by Marriott. Three blocks north you’ll find Faena House that touts a silhouette by Rem Koolhaas and rumored owners that include Lloyd Blankfein. Its Faena Hotel, still slated to open this year, will feature interiors by Hollywood Director/Designer duo Baz Luhrman and Catherine Martin. Even more north in Miami’s Surfside, Richard Meier is spearheading the new Four Seasons project at the Russell Pancoast-designed Surf Club that will include a 80-room hotel and 150 private residences.

Closer to South Beach, the short-lived Gansevoort will debut as 1 Hotels South Beach that looks to connect man and environment through serine but stylish interiors albeit with no recognizable names attached. Nearby at 18th and Collins, hotelier Jason Pomeranc gives a glimpse of his post-Thompson vision for Sixty Hotels with the revamp of the Lapidus-designed Nautilus Hotel. And the gargantuan Brickell City Centre will be home to EAST Miami by Swire Hotels with its Asian-born design roots and South American stylishness that will include a parilla eatery by the creator of La Huella in Uruguay’s Jose Ignacio.
