Design Hotel
For the Amsterdam edition of Hyatt's Andaz Hotels, the US-based chain teams with local architect wunderkind Marcel Wanders for a stunning design compound along the Prinsengracht in popular-Jordaan district. The building occupies a former-public library with landmark details preserved on the outside and new interior reflecting a bold, architectural statement. Guests arrive to a dramatic reception of two-story ceiling strewn with oversize tulip-shaped chandeliers amongst floor-to-ceiling bookshelves stuffed with fashionable bric-a-brac. Eccentrically colorful wall trimming surround a stylish drinking bar with Moooi smoke chairs and more-demure leather sofas conducive to late lounge nights. The in-house eatery, known as Bluespoon with its own artisanal drinking bar, features farm-to-table cuisine derived from the North Sea coast.
The Room
A total of 117-guest rooms and five suites further the ethereal design style of the lobby with colorful wall trimmings that mix folkloric images with a Lewis Carroll playfulness. Room views vary between front-facing canal views to those that face an interior courtyard or rear garden. Entry-level rooms integrate sleeping area with console sinks with backlit mirror. Bold chairs contrast more gentile room accents like hand-blown lass lamps and vintage accouterments that lend a uniquely local narrative to a global hotel brand.
