It's been a rocky start for Snowmass Village that's faced closure and looming liquidation sale that took it from boom to bust in a single season. But don't judge the Viceroy by such inconvenient truths, opened in 2009 with super-hip design adjacent to Snowmass' Assay Hill Lift offers ski in/ski out guest rooms a gondola-ride away from Snowmass's fiscal black cloud that should clear within another season.

For now it's the best deal in Aspen, or at least almost-Aspen, within a sloped roof Swiss-meets-Rocky Mountain architecture that has one of the prettiest lobby's you'll find in any snow resort with lobby of vertical exotic wood paneling and leather seating area tossed with faux-fur throws facing an elongated gas fireplace.  Viceroy's most famous designer Kelly Wearstler's work is confined to the bright and airy pool café and slope-side pool experience complete with cabanas and contrastingly feminine loungers.

Once inside the Viceroy Snowmass a full resort experience is rounded-out with dark and moody eatery called Eight-K, a local dining hit with New American menu that combines locally-sourced cuisine and inventive preparations. A slope-side ski valet offers stow-away services for quick getaways to the 87-foot-long, glass-topped, après-ski lobby bar or the full-service 7,000-square foot spa with fitness room designed by Jean Michel-Gathy.

The Room

Free of Wearstler-isms like porcelain greyhounds of geometric-print settees, the rooms of Viceroy Snowmass don’t look very Viceroy that’s a bit of a disappointment. Dark décor of wood furnishings and uncreative furniture placement make you crave the pizazz found in the hotel’s Nest café and lounges that were actually designed by the Kelly herself. Guest rooms range from simple studios to expansive four bedroom residences, with galley or full kitchens, stunning mountain views and contemporary alpine décor.
