Design Hotel
We've long bemoaned the lack of chic hotels in Sydney, with a few exceptions of course. Old Clare Hotel arrives with a new, however rustic, look within two heritage-listed buildings along revamped Kensington Street in Chippendale. This burgeoning neighborhood is known for its art galleries, production houses and design studios which becomes obvious from the chic, boho crowd that flocks here anytime after 5pm. Inside, a reclaimed visual narrative prevails with exposed brick walls, heavy ironwork and walls of glass that frame industrial silhouettes of surrounding building. Think Ace Hotel NYC with a design edge, the property is also home to three cutting edge restaurants from chefs Sam Miller, Clayton Wells and Jason Atherton. On the rooftop, a long swimmer's pool is lined in loungers with some of the best views in town in addition to two bar usually packed til 3am.
The Room
A series of seven categories for its 27 guest rooms include the ever-modest entry-level Connell Room with its integrated living and bathroom cast beneath 15-ft. ceilings. Exotic wood floors offset intentionally stained plastering and art-free walls. Bathrooms are spare yet well-accessorized with natural stone flooring that extends up the walls with double basin vanities lined in Triumph & Disaster toiletries. Larger Chippendale Loft and Showroom Suite are equipped like private apartments with occasional two-floor layout and lofty living area fit for weeklong stays fit for a Sydney local.
