Sometimes in places like Saint-Barth, Japanese dining takes on more pretense than actual culinary substance. Orega is a rare exception, occupying a one-room dining room with sushi bar in Gustavia. A classic bungalow facade yields raw teak floors that juxtapose primitive chairs and simple counter-style sushi bar with peek-a-book kitchen that's one of our favorite sushi spots in Saint-Barth.
The Food
Open six nights a week for dinner, meals begin with starters like rice paper rolls with shrimp and mango, tuna tataki and Wagyu gyoka. Selection of sushi and sashimi include favorable Hamachi Jalapeno or signature Orega roll for newcomers followed by French-minded mains like Mahi Mahi with wasai sauce, confit duck and rack of lamb with sweet potatoes.
